In very wet conditions on Sunday Mahunga came out on top in the final round of the Marquis Shield. It was a top of the table clash against Eketahuna and in the singles matches Mahunga came out on top with 7.5 wins to Eketahuna's 4.5. In the Fourball matches it was Eketahuna who came out on top and won 4 matches to Mahunga's 2. So the points for the round were shared and Mahunga was able to hang on to the one point lead it had going into the final round and take out the coveted Marquis Shield Trophy. The team also managed to pick up three other trophies on the day, taking home the Fourball Cup for most wins in fourball matches, the Marquis Cup for most match wins in the competition and the Juniors won the Sutherland Trophy. So all in all a very successful day for the club.
On Saturday the club competition was a Medal round and in group 1 first was Ivan Karaitiana with nett 69 followed by Chris Wenden on nett 70 and Stu Northe with nett 71. In group 2 Carl Cocks was an easy winner with nett 70 followed by Derek Bentley with nett 73 and Laurence Butler with nett 74. Stu Northe scored the only hole in 2 and the nearest the pins went to Phillip Granich, Shane Hawkins, Troy Shaw, Ivan Karaitiana, Chris Wenden and Shane Stewart.
On Tuesday the vets played a Stableford competition and in the men's division Ross Ireland was an easy winner on 42 points which is great scoring over 16 holes. Next was Meki Lauvi on 32 points followed by Eddie Tuuta on 31 points. In the ladies division Nan McNae was the winner with 30 points, followed by Lyn Morrell on 28 points. For the 9 holers Betty Loader had 11 points followed by Irene Phelps on 10 points. Nearest the pins went to Meki Lauvi, Lyn Morrel and Maria Lauvi. Holes in two were scored by Nan McNae and Maria Lauvi.
This Saturday sees the flag competition held which is based on a Medal round and we will see if we can get past the 20th hole this year. Sundays competition is a Stableford round.
